I can't thank you enough. Right now I am dealing with a team of mostly new devs. who use VS code, Sublime and NetBeans. While I have been using PHPStorm for a long time. Probably over 6 years.
With my current team, Suring code reviews , I had caught errors and told dev how to fix. Having note used any of the editors they are using, I had assumed that the features I am using in PHPStorm are available in these editors.
VSCode is free, open source and allows you to work with any language you need: C, C++, C#, Java, Rust, PHP, Ruby and etc. If this things is important for you, then choose VSCode, in other cases PHPStorm is better.

not showing an error is better in that case IMO, code should be tested so the error won't go unnoticed anyway, and php files should not contain editor specific settings

I'm using VSCode for single file editing and PHPStorm for complete project, it just works. I have tried to install a lot of extensions to make VSCode work like PHPStorm but no luck, it still seems like it will break any time 🙂

Start-up time – who cares? I leave my IDE open all the time. Disk space usage – I have 2TB – who cares? RAM usage – I have 32GB – who cares? Screen size – I have monitors – who cares? I've been using PHPStorm for 5 years. It's comprehensiveness is impressive. The least favorite for me is the Database query parser – I use meekrodb for my MySQL calls, and it doesn't understand that. I can flip into Clover for code coverage, and debug within my machine nicely. Setup for debugging is difficult, but once done very useful. I end-up spending most of my time client-side in various Javascript libraries including React, AngularJS, Angular2+, and VueJS – PHPStorm understands all of those out-of-the-box. Code inspections for all the various versions of Javascript are supported and controllable. Global Search is very good, though it would be nice to have checkboxes to specifically exclude, say, folders – as I have logging files that clutter the global results. Going back-and-forth between test, stage, and deployed servers is trivial…PHPStorm is the ONLY program I keep my lease up-to-date.

Go for PHPStorm if you’re developing in PHP. VC is too dumb IMO, you have to install Intellisense and other plugins to make things easier but many of the useful features are already built in on PHP Storm. And nothing beats PHPStorm when it comes to indexing files, function and classes, it’s so easy to search once you know the shortcuts. Of you’re looking for lighter ones, Sublime is a good choice.

Very in depth comparison altough I'm not sure it's fair. PHP storm is made specifically for php development, VS code is a more general purpose IDE. I like how versatile VS code is and I use it for python and C++ development. However PHP storm has spoiled me when it comes to it's autocompletion and I can't develop anything in PHP without it anymore…
But that's just my opinion.

Thank you for making this detailed comparison Zura. I agree that there are so many things that VSCode does very very well, however the Intellij editors is pretty much better in every sense and can justify its price. Because it saves a lot of time and ads a lot of confort, especially when refactoring the code, which is a huge thing we do every day. It has a price, but at what cost?
VS code is free, but so is cycling to work, and it would be the same saying "you can ride bycicle to work for 40min instead of driving car for 10". For someone it makes sense, but it doesn't work equaly good for everybody.

phpstorm is targetting only php projects while if you use a combination of languages, vscode is better… If project is strictly in php, i vote phpstorm.

I came from Android. Php storm was an automatic win for me. Vscode came later, it's a good Editor for opening single files but php storm is miles ahead, no matter how much extensions you install
PHP is kinda outdated and world is moving towards Python and Node.js.
Never mind but I don't think this comparison worth it now…
Good subject, I am using VS CODE with all Php extensions. and I want to switch to Phpstorm, and I want to know if Phpstorm gives added values to Php developer
