So $4K to do the entire job? That is my understanding… am I correct?
Thank God for the comment section so I could figure out what that dude was being called, I thought the Wizard was calling him the “butt ninja”!
That guys got a smooth voice. He needs to be on radio.
I subbed because of all the porsches on the channel ❤️
car wizard is always bashing other mechanics- what a dirtbag!
Why on earth is there even an intermediate shaft? Other flat and V engines drive the cams from the front of the engine. Did Porsche use the same design of cylinder head on both sides of the engine? If so why?
Where's your shop i need mine replaced ?
This dude should have a YouTube channel himself
Brilliant explanation, best I've heard and I've been watching 996 stuff a while as I'm rebuilding an engine myself even though I have no experience 🤣😱🤪
I thought the ims fix is a oiled bearing?
Wizard you need gloves!!!!! Have you checked you blood for hydrocarbons
There's an article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. google “Autohaus Hamilton Porsche IMS” The article lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. "The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: All 986 Boxster models. – 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 – All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) – 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745" Before 2000 Porsche used a double row IMS Bearing which had a low failure rate, then they switched to a single row until 2005 – 2006 and this single row has had the most problems. After 2005 – 2006 Porsche stayed with the single row but increased it's size and strength and this bearing has had the least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1997 to 2008. The upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it unless you strip the entire engine down. Some of the early production 2005 – 2006 987 and 997 might have the pre-upgraded bearing fitted, that's why the engine numbers in the Autohaus article might be helpful in determining which type of IMS bearing is installed.
Why not IIMS Solution with dedicated oil feed from the engine?
You can talk about your 911's all day long. I'd rather have a Boxter.
wow, thin green line flag while having a black man on the show– the only thing more offensive would be to have a thin blue line or a confederate flag.
I guess times have changed. i did the same whole job like you did. Bought my parts from EPS and spent a total of less than $1000. EPS makes the most robust IMS bearing you can get, and they sell a clutch with more meat on it. I did not change my near perfect flywheel. Mine is a 2002 Boxster S. I did it in my home garage with the car up on jack stands. Took me a week of afternoons and was pretty easy and straightforward for a handy guy. You need a transmission jack and you can make the IMS removal tool. I've done 3000 miles since and runs like a new one. Good Luck!
Somebody does not know how to drive "stick shift." 🤣🤣🤣
Most ppl. do not know how to use a clutch & think it's ok to slip the clutch when taking off. NOT!! Use the engine torque & let the clutch out, Then accelerate..your clutch will last 3-4 times as long. Clutch wear occurs w/it's slipping.
These cars are money in a furnace…..
For the money , insurance, repairs, and having been a satisfied owner at one point in the 70s ,Porsche is the most overrated con jobs ever sprung on an over status conscious driver. The best thing ferry ever designed was the air cooled line. Everything that came after was junk…..
How many miles on that 996 when IMS replaced?
People have to remember these are $100,000 vehicles. No cheap parts or labor. These are race cars not Toyota utility vehicles
Hi car wizard,
I just watch this vídeo
and YouTube sugestões this one.

It is from Wheeler Dealers
Hi guys. I'm Bob. From UK. And a mad porsche nut having had seven from 924, 944, and air cooled 911s. Now drive a cayenne.. I do every thing my self . I am an engine builder from cosworth.. but my question is I see lots of guys doing the ims. Which would be easy for me. But I never hear anyone talk about locking the engine in place before taking the ims out. As in the book 101 things yo do to your boxster. Just would like to know if you do that. Kind regards Bob Rose. Uk
I got to say I prefer spending a bit more for "The Solution" instead of the ceramic bearing. The solution is a little more involved installation wise as it requires and oil feed line from and included filter adapter however it utilizes a plan oil fed bearing like the opposite end.
Price of that bearing is absolutely insane 😳🤯
its like this old house for cars
everybody makes a big deal about the ims. They change them out most because "just in case" I read a report on the failure of these. Very low percentage of failure. I am not saying they don't fail but the research statistics don't agree with the reasoning that one should change them.
i replaced my clutch assembly on my drive way. It was not a problem.
I had a 2000 Boxster S and it ended up with a cracked head. Seems also to be common. Any info on that?
How about doing a buy this not that for Porsche.
Dramatic over stated issues good for advertising overly expensive parts god as he says for his favourite type of customer
great video , i have a 996 Targa that I bought new in 2002. it has 28k miles on it.. I have never had an issue with this car.. From what I'm seeing , having the IMS bearing replaced is a must?
Great video, Wizard. Would have been cool to see the process as you were disassembling and removing the old bearing. Let's hear more from the Bug Ninja!
I have a Oct '98 built 996 as a '99 Gen 1 year model. 55k miles on it now .It came w/ the dual row IMS. However, at 50k, installed a LN Engineering Ceramic IMS, Also, replaced the AOS, water pump, clutch. This Porsche is good for 150K on the odometer and more.. It is my daily driver now. Love it !!
Germany is nothing without ball bearings! Send the bombers! Any way it is going to be expensive. History repeats.
Very informative, thank you gentlemen.
What’s the best Porsche to buy as a first Porsche? Keeping in mind affordability and reliability.
Please tell me the Bug Ninja does voice over work, because he should be making bank for the way he sounds!
How do you know its going bad? Are there signs or noises to look out for?
I really like Buck Ninja. He spoke perfectly, not over Wizard, let Wizard keep the lead, but complemented really well. He seems like he knows some stuff and I'd like to see him more.
I came here to see if any Porsche fanboys flooded the comments with "the IMS bearing failure is overhyped".
RMS was a warranty recall back in ‘03. On both cars. The IMS was just a twinkle in PCNA’s eye at that time…😜
