  1. Thank God for the comment section so I could figure out what that dude was being called, I thought the Wizard was calling him the “butt ninja”!

That guys got a smooth voice. He needs to be on radio.

  2. Why on earth is there even an intermediate shaft? Other flat and V engines drive the cams from the front of the engine. Did Porsche use the same design of cylinder head on both sides of the engine? If so why?

  3. There's an article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. google “Autohaus Hamilton Porsche IMS” The article lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. "The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: All 986 Boxster models. – 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 – All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) – 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745" Before 2000 Porsche used a double row IMS Bearing which had a low failure rate, then they switched to a single row until 2005 – 2006 and this single row has had the most problems. After 2005 – 2006 Porsche stayed with the single row but increased it's size and strength and this bearing has had the least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1997 to 2008. The upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it unless you strip the entire engine down. Some of the early production 2005 – 2006 987 and 997 might have the pre-upgraded bearing fitted, that's why the engine numbers in the Autohaus article might be helpful in determining which type of IMS bearing is installed.

  4. I guess times have changed. i did the same whole job like you did. Bought my parts from EPS and spent a total of less than $1000. EPS makes the most robust IMS bearing you can get, and they sell a clutch with more meat on it. I did not change my near perfect flywheel. Mine is a 2002 Boxster S. I did it in my home garage with the car up on jack stands. Took me a week of afternoons and was pretty easy and straightforward for a handy guy. You need a transmission jack and you can make the IMS removal tool. I've done 3000 miles since and runs like a new one. Good Luck!

  5. Most ppl. do not know how to use a clutch & think it's ok to slip the clutch when taking off. NOT!! Use the engine torque & let the clutch out, Then accelerate..your clutch will last 3-4 times as long. Clutch wear occurs w/it's slipping.

  6. For the money , insurance, repairs, and having been a satisfied owner at one point in the 70s ,Porsche is the most overrated con jobs ever sprung on an over status conscious driver. The best thing ferry ever designed was the air cooled line. Everything that came after was junk…..

  7. Hi guys. I'm Bob. From UK. And a mad porsche nut having had seven from 924, 944, and air cooled 911s. Now drive a cayenne.. I do every thing my self . I am an engine builder from cosworth.. but my question is I see lots of guys doing the ims. Which would be easy for me. But I never hear anyone talk about locking the engine in place before taking the ims out. As in the book 101 things yo do to your boxster. Just would like to know if you do that. Kind regards Bob Rose. Uk

  8. I got to say I prefer spending a bit more for "The Solution" instead of the ceramic bearing. The solution is a little more involved installation wise as it requires and oil feed line from and included filter adapter however it utilizes a plan oil fed bearing like the opposite end.

  9. everybody makes a big deal about the ims. They change them out most because "just in case" I read a report on the failure of these. Very low percentage of failure. I am not saying they don't fail but the research statistics don't agree with the reasoning that one should change them.

  10. great video , i have a 996 Targa that I bought new in 2002. it has 28k miles on it.. I have never had an issue with this car.. From what I'm seeing , having the IMS bearing replaced is a must?

  11. Great video, Wizard. Would have been cool to see the process as you were disassembling and removing the old bearing. Let's hear more from the Bug Ninja!

  12. I have a Oct '98 built 996 as a '99 Gen 1 year model. 55k miles on it now .It came w/ the dual row IMS. However, at 50k, installed a LN Engineering Ceramic IMS, Also, replaced the AOS, water pump, clutch. This Porsche is good for 150K on the odometer and more.. It is my daily driver now. Love it !!

  13. I really like Buck Ninja. He spoke perfectly, not over Wizard, let Wizard keep the lead, but complemented really well. He seems like he knows some stuff and I'd like to see him more.
