I changed mine with an EPS bearing. Made the puller out of a bolt and piece of pipe. Easy. DON"T take your car down and fail to replace that bearing. My old one was perfect also, but you never know. If it goes, so does your engine. The EPS bearing is a bigger roller bearing and won't fail.
How on EARTH did you get to that rear bolt on the AC compressor?? Which tools or extensions did you use?
maybe a bearing puller from "super cheap" is showing it's savings.

There's an article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. google “Autohaus Hamilton Porsche IMS” The article lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. "The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: All 986 Boxster models. – 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 – All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) – 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745" Before 2000 Porsche used a double row IMS Bearing which had a low failure rate, then they switched to a single row until 2005 – 2006 and this single row has had the most problems. After 2005 – 2006 Porsche stayed with the single row but increased it's size and strength and this bearing has had the least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1997 to 2008. The upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it unless you strip the entire engine down. Some of the early production 2005 – 2006 987 and 997 might have the pre-upgraded bearing fitted, that's why the engine numbers in the Autohaus article might be helpful in determining which type of IMS bearing is installed.
Jeff I had to rewind because I heard something you said to describe excessive play. Now I not sure what was on your mind at the time but you described it as SCHLOP. Well I have two dogs and sound of them lapping up water is schlopping ….don't think that works here .However a one modern day version …The sound which is made when a very wet substance hits a durable surface at force. This sound would be most commonly heard when an extremely wet turd departs from your anus and hits the surface of the water at speed. Jeff the ims is a right turd….
Since you're great at fab, surprised you didn't weld a nut on a thread rod, make a bridge, etc.

If it's such a problem with these ims bearings why doesn't Porsche do something about it.
customers would then have confidence in their products. and buy more Porsches instead of buying an Audi or something else.?

Never start a complex job without the right tools……
Some bearing kits come with the proper tool to remove the IMS.
No other puller or extractor will do the job it's has to be the correct porsche spec tool. A slide hammer will wreck the bearing at the other end of the Ims shaft.
Just proves that people should leave the IMS alone and just drive the car. Probably most of the IMS bearing failures occurs when people are pulling them out to replace for an aftermarket.:p
If you have to go down that road and if you have to remove that bearing, maybe an SKF Rep or an SKF Bearing supplier would lend you a pair and you can give them a Youtube review of this product doing that job…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZFWLv8mRjc

Sorry Jeff but i think you forgot the SNAPRING that holds the IMS bearing in the shaft, Done it myself so no hate BUT its all got to come out again
Isnt there a Circlip in front of that bearing that has to be removed so that you can pull the bearing?

Good job Trump hasn’t seen this, he’d recommend putting disinfectant in the engine and using UV light to get the bearing out.

Don't you pull the bearing by tugging on the bolt you bonked into the shaft? Put a nut on it and use an 3-prong (outside arms) puller.
I don’t understand it. you drive with the “bulk” inside the I-schaft? Or where is middle piece of bearing?

Hello Jeff, the Youtuber Burner's Cars shows a tool to remove the IMS bearing
there a snap ring holding the bearing in its place, I saw a you tube video and Both where done with the correct puller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAxj6FKMzvM however he says you can also do it with 2 pry bars
