ข้อเสียของการเปิด L/C คือ ต้องมีการตรวจสอบข้อกำหนดและเงื่อนไขต่าง ๆ ที่จะระบุใน L/C นั้น ก่อนเปิด L/C ผู้ซื้อและผู้ขายต้องคุยรายละเอียดกันก่อนว่าสามารถรทำได้หรือไม่ได้ เพราะเงื่อนไขเดียวของการได้รับชำระเงินตาม L/C นั้นคือ เอกสารถูกต้องและครบถ้วนตามที่ระบุใน L/C เท่านั้น และมีค่าใช้จ่ายในดำเนินการสูงกว่าการชำระเงินวิธีอื่น
