The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was commonly called the sports car of the Navy. The F-8 was, too, huh? Huh.
My cousin flew these. He loved them, & he loved tormenting Phantom drivers!
A lot of hype and errors
It's one of those classic jets that has a quality that many don't, pure style. The P80 Shooting Star doesn't have style but the F86 Sabre does…..The Phantom and Crusader have style but the Hunter and Thunderchief don't……Just my personal opinion!
Is this aircraft a relative of the A-7 Corsair?
What a dandy
What's the song playing in the intro?
Unfortunately its 20mm cannons were the Colt Mk12s which were the crappiest 20mm to see any US service being far less reliable than the somewhat heavier but also faster firing M39 which used a revolver feed mechanism (Same as the British ADEN and French DEFA in 30mm and German Mauser BK-27 in 27mm) as fitted to many airforce fighters of the same time period. Eventually all US Services which used the 20mm caliber for autocannons standardized around the General Electric M61 rotary cannon which had a lower mean time between failures still (1 in 10,000 vs 1 in 1,000 of M39A1 and even worse for Colt Mk12), lower barrel wear, faster overall rate of fire, more compact and lighter than the multiple 20mm gun installations they replaced in aircraft designs. The problem with all rotary cannons though is, for short bursts they're less effective than most single-barrel designs because the maximum rate of fire isn't instataneously achieved (the barrel assembly needs to spin up to full speed). So in situations where you're firing bursts longer than 1 second they're fantastic but if you're just trying to pop off a fraction of a second they're worse. As i recall, the M61A1 achieves 61 rounds in its first second of firing whereas the four Mk12s in the F-8 achieved 67 rounds in the same time. But in terms of magazine capacity a single M61 comes out ahead of multiple Mk12s (or M39s in USAF aircraft) with seperate ammunition feeds. In the F-8, the installation for the four Mk12s had only 125 rounds per gun which for a cyclic rate of 1,000rpm gave only 7.5 seconds of continuous firing. The M61A1 Cannon installations of F-4s (external centerline gun pod with 1200 rounds for F-4Ds and internal under nose for F-4E and later versions had 640 rounds) and 1,028 internal for F-105s allowed much more firing and with far fewer failures accounting for a lot more gun kills. In its entire vietnam career the F-8 only got four gun kills while in 1972 F-4Es accounted for 6 gun kills and in 67-68. The USAF F-105D/Fs with over 1000 rounds internal accounted for 25 gun kills between June '66 and August '67 and one F-105D pilot scored two gun kills in the same sortie. Hell three US Navy attack squiadron A-1 Skyraiders managed two Mig-17 and a single Mig-21 kills with four of the older, slower cyclic rate (about 700rpm) and much more reliable AN/M3 20mm cannons with 200rpg (which the Colt Mk12s had been designed to replace) and in spite of an enormous difference in operating performance of the aircraft involved..The only other US Navy aircraft with Colt Mk12s to see service in Vietnam, the A-4 Skyhawk achieved no gun kills and only a single Mig-17 kill in total (using 5 inch ZUNI rockets) throughout the entire six year war.
CANADIAN TSR2! – WHAT HAPPENS WHEN S**THE AD POLITICOS MESS WITH GOOD MILITARY PROJECTS…AND UPSET THE YANKEE AVIATION MAFIA! – RIP Avro Arrow!…..
OK but um isn't the A-10 the last gunfighter since it was developed with its gun as its main armament and it was introduced 20 years after
With A-biden-HOLE in office, we'll probably have to pull these out of mothballs to have something to use.
F-8 did not beat out the F-4 and it was not faster, total crap
Damm I love this channel 👌
The F-4 had over 300 MiG kills and was faster than the Crusader. Some of your information is wrong.
No simulator's,, You strapped it on & hoped you had it right!!!👍👍🇺🇸when men were tough!!!!!
Vought, Douglas, Grumman are gonne be remembered for designing remarkable Naval aircraft for the USN
" I love it when a plan comes together!", Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith!😁🤟
Cool plane, BUT the F4 Phantom is the old school hot rod of jet fighters!😁
POW for 8 years? Fuck that.
I have a special name for the plane
Shark hunter
THAT IS A STRAIGHT LINE FIRING GUNFIGHTER, ALL OTHER FIGHTERS FIRE ON DEFLECTION SYSTEM SO THEY DO NOT SHOOT THEMSELFS DOWN.
Fun fact the Philippines was the only country in Asia with F8's
What's the song at the start of the video called?
Historians and Veteran pilots : the last gunfighter
War thunder players : POG PLANE
We have a gutted f-8 on display in Bremerton Washington. You can see it anytime, these things were big! Very cool jet.
11:00 ''Currently used by space shuttles'' Space shuttles retired 10 years ago
I'd be more inclined that he is perfect for these….more info the better in a lotted time.
sometimes i see the Crusader as the spiritual predecessor of the f16
Someone in the Pentagon decided that missiles were the way to go and guns were not needed. The F-4 was the first model WITHOUT guns. When Navy, Marines and Air Force pilots complained about not having a gun or cannon on a fighter in close air combat, a gun was on the centerline pod until the F-4E models and ALL U.S. fighters have cannons as standard. That's why it's the last gunfighter.
When did this become the “A”-7 corsair ll ? My brother flew these in the 70-80’s in the navy and air guard
5:00 pay attention to the number
I believe you meant the French NAVY bought the F8's and not their army.
1261 aircraft were made, 1106 of which were involved in accidents, sounds like a pilot's nightmare to me
My favourite modern aircraft. Simple and designed for a single purpose, to kill other airplanes. The Crusader was a pilots dream and it was said that it was the last of the dogfighters that you strapped on and went to fight.
do the Corsair II next.
In test,F-8 was far better than F-4 Phantom II in air superiority roles…especially due its dog fight performance, which could outmatch MiG-21 ,unlike F-4
You sucks! You speaks so fast that I couldn't understand what you said
