Thanks Carl. iCloud is now a tiny bit less mysterious to this old guy, but I still don't understand how to get files from my iMac into my iPad. I store all my photos in the Document folder but I can't find it on my iPad. I see the apps, but no document folder. Any good ideas for me?

What would happen if I delete photos from iCloud.com but all of my synced apple devices are put into airplane mode? Will the photos only get removed from the devices once they are connected to the internet?

Thanks for the video! So I don't need to have one spot on my laptop where everything is stored. I could put something on the cloud and then delete it from my laptop? I'm in the middle of changing laptops and I'm also using my work laptop. I don't want iCloud to get confused and start deleting things because it's not in the original place where I saved it. Good video! Apple needs to grab on to block saving like Microsoft and backup like Google Photos so that you can free up space on your device.

I wish Apple would do a better job of communication to its customers that iCloud deletes photos if you delete them from your phone. Many think it’s “external storage” instead of backup. I know many that cleaned up storage in their phones thinking it was backed up

The one thing that annoyed me with iCloud is that I kept getting an error saying my phone won't backup because the storage was full….. When I looked at my phone it was only showing using 1.6GB of the 5GB you get. I turned off options like photos a few random apps ect ect, still "device has not been backed up". I finally said screw it and got the 200GB storage. Well, phone backs up now, but guess what, its still only using 2.4GB after turning back on all the options..
No idea why it kept throwing me that error.

I delete files in icloud drive using different methods: through the browser on the iсloud.com website, in the finder on the macbook by selecting icloud drive, through the mobile phone the Files application, through the icloud settings on the phone. The files disappear, but the occupied space is not updated, and there is no more free space. I also cleaned the trash bin on the MacBook, cleared the Recently Deleted folder, waited 40 days. Nothing helps. I delete the files, but the space that was occupied remains so much. How do I update the occupied space in icloud drive?

How did you create those additional folders? I want my download folder to backup on iCloud as well, but it only gives the option to do so with desktop and documents for me.

Hi Carl, thanks for this informative video. Keep em coming. I just decided to check the box for uploading my documents and desktop stuff on my icloud today, but it seemed to dump everything automatically in one new folder. This is worrysome for me, because I do a lot of coding in R and Python and now when I try and open files I get a warning saying that this file has been deleted or moved. I do not want this. If I uncheck my documents and desktop now, does that mean it will put everything back on my local disk (which is what I want)? I'm just very scared to lose my files

Wonderfull video. I like to add something if I may. If you have desktop & documents activated on your Mac's e.g. an Imac, an Mac mini and a Macbook Air, and you store a file on the desktop of one of those machines, it will appear on the desktop of the other machines asswell. That can be very handy. As if you work on one computer. However, and that is really fun, I use sticky notes (kind of Post-it notes) a lot on my desktop of my Mac mini, but not on the other computers. It does not put that on the other desktops.
Concerning people with nasty comments. Ignore them of just delete their comments if it bothers you. You are making a great contibution to people who want to learn some more. Thank you for that!
Dear Carl, so please excuse me being a total Apple newbie/thicko here, so am I right in thinking that the icloud saves to the icloud whenever I press save please?
Because I am kind of hoping that icloud will sit there behind the scenes and not slow my flow so to speak.

-I have an iPhone XS Max, how can I move all my photos from iCloud storage to the phone's storage? (if that makes sense)
-How can I have everything stop saving under iCloud storage? (stop syncing)
-I also just got a MacBook Air, How can I save files, photos, etc to the laptop's storage and not iCloud storage? (because it's already notifying me that my iCloud storage is full)
-Last question, is my iCloud sync together now with my phone and my MacBook air?
