Good afternoon everyone. I will give a short presentation on facts related to the available Covid 19 vaccine for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019. My name is Dr. Siam. I’m a Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Sciences at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in the beautiful island of St Kitts.
To start there is no doubt that immunization is a global health and development success story vaccines have protected us against so many diseases that are listed here this is a picture of a girl suffering from poliomyelitis a viral disease that causes muscle paralysis in 1988 global polio eradication initiative efforts including routine and intensive supplemental immunization of polio virus vaccine had led to the drop in the global incidence of poliomyelitis by 1999. In short vaccines are good and vaccines protect us from infectious diseases.
Let’s start with the Pfizer BioNTech Covid 19 vaccine on December 11 2020, the US FDA, issued the first emergency use authorization for a vaccine for the prevention of COVID19 in individuals 16 years of age and older. Pfizer BioNTech vaccine was developed by Pfizer in corporation an American multinational pharmaceutical company and BioNTech SE a German Biotechnology Company. This was the first approved messenger mRNA vaccine. Where the messenger mRNA which is part of the coronavirus genetic material is injected and the body will form the viral protein promoting our immune system to attack covid19. This vaccine is 94 to 95 % effective in preventing symptomatic covid19 and is given in two intramuscular injections 21 days apart.
On December 18 2020, the US FDA issued an emergency use authorization for the second vaccine which is the Moderna Vaccine. This Moderna Vaccine is to be distributed in individuals 18 years of age and older. The Moderna Covid19 vaccine was developed by Moderna in cooperation a biotech company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the national institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. This is the second messenger mRNA vaccine that was approved and it’s very similar to the Pfizer Vaccine except that the Pfizer requires minus 70 degrees celsius for storage while the Moderna vaccine requires minus 20 degrees Celsius for storage. Both vaccines are contraindicated in patients who develop severe allergies or anaphylaxis or any immediate allergic reaction following the first dose.
There are several questions that come my way that I would like to discuss for example, I was asked can I still catch the virus if I have had the vaccine or been previously infected? The answer to this so far is yes. Yes you can catch the virus if you’ve had the vaccine or a previous corona virus infection. Clinical trials for the Covid19 vaccine approved so far show that they can substantially reduce the risk of becoming ill with the virus but some people may still get infected and may even be able to spread the virus. Another question, should I still have the vaccine if I’ve had Covid 19? The answer is yes. At this point it’s difficult to predict how we will be protected after infection. In addition many people think that they have contracted Covid 19 but they have actually not performed the test to confirm that they have been previously infected. The third question, will a covid19 vaccine protect me from getting sick from covid 19? And yes Covid 19 vaccine works by forming antibodies to recognize and kill the virus that causes covid19. The vaccine will protect you from getting sick but may cause mild illness.
