Berutang adalah keseharian lumrah dalam kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia. Nyatanya penagihan utang terus menjadi momok yang menghantui berbagai lapisan sosial. Banyak orang takut bila debtcollector hadir di pintu rumah mereka. Selain karena sosok penagih utang ini misterius, ditambah ceritacerita seram tentang kekejaman dan ramainya pemberitaan setiap adanya insiden antara nasabah dan debtcollector, makin disegani saja para penagih utang itu.
Kebanyakan orang yang bekerja di industri penagihan utang berasal dari timur Indonesia, khususnya dari Kepulauan Maluku, seperti Seram dan Ambon. Bagi mereka, diskriminasi atas warna kulit dan \”tampang seram\” adalah bagian dari realitas kehidupan. Banyak pemuda keturunan Maluku gagal mendapat pekerjaan di bidang selain penagihan utang. Stigma buruk terhadap pekerjaan ini merupakan warisan dari era Orde Baru, ketika kekerasan di jalanan masih lumrah dan regulasi perbankan relatif abuabu.
